“Female Audiences Don’t Want To Watch Porn,” and Other Ridiculous Statements

I was recently reading an article about Eva Longoria’s lesbian love scene in a new comedy, “Without Men.” My blood really started pumping when I thought about Eva and some other beautiful woman trading lipstick in the name of old-fashioned, gratuitous, girl-on-girl, softcore-for-the-mainstream visuals… but then my lady-boner was knocked down with this statement from the Huffington Post:

“It was a little difficult as the two girls are both straight so they were very nervous and laughed a lot,” the film’s director, Gabriela Tagliavini, told Fox News. “But I think that just made it even lovelier. [Female audiences] don’t want to watch porn, so it was all very sensual, both are very beautiful women aside from being incredibly funny.”

First of all, I don’t see how two straight women kissing is lovelier than two women who might actually want to kiss each other. Secondly, what?!? I’m a woman and I find myself absent-mindedly browsing the web for naked ladies and fantasy material on a regular basis. Besides, the Internet makes porn so readily accessible that it’s practically impossible not to get sucked in (no pun intended) to look at something naughty, even when you’re not really looking for something naughty. When a person says something like this, what are they really saying? Are they saying women don’t have a sex drive? Are they saying women don’t masturbate?

I keep hearing how “men are more visual than women.” Since I am neither a scientist nor an omnipotent being, I can’t attest to the validity of this statement. However, I do know that when I’m staring at a dick (or a vagina, for that matter), or even when I’m looking at someone attractive who has clothes on, I’m usually revved up and ready to go. I refuse to believe I’m the only female on the planet who is sexually stimulated by visual input. Besides, how do you explain all of these women who fall for good-looking jerks? Obviously, women are sexually aroused through visual stimulation. Why aren’t they watching porn? Who says they aren’t?? A scientific poll?

Many women don’t want to be seen as “sluts.” Because of this, they are less likely to explore something like porn for fear of being caught… and if they do explore porn, they probably don’t fess up to it.

Do women watch porn? YES. Don’t be naive. Do they constantly broadcast it or wear t-shirts and buttons that advertise their appetites? Um, no… well, unless they’re me 🙂

  1. Because you are posting personal information about her in a context where it doesn’t belong.

  2. We used to talk about this subject alot my podcast. We were very sexist at first. Making very broad (no pun intended) statements about women not liking sex. We have since come to agree that there are exceptions. You seem like one except at the part where you lost your girl boner from a sentence. J/k

The problem is (often) that just as men lie about being interested in women so they can get laid, many women lie that they love to suck cock so they can get a second date. This is why men are stereotyped as assholes that don’t call and women are stereotyped as bad drivers.

    • Great post! It is true that some people do (A) and some other people do (B). I agree that stereotypes arise from common experiences with groups (A) and (B), but these experiences (and certainly these stereotypes) do not deserve to be touted as valid representations of entire groups of people. Let’s not forget about C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O….

The moral of just about any story is *just that*: do not attempt to generalize ANY group of people. Because… you’ll ALWAYS be WRONG.

  3. In reality men are very visual. Goes back to the basic biological make up of the male and the need to reproduce. Men are attracted to younger women, alert breasts, women with hips, women who appear healthy, etc. This is because that quick visual lets the male known this is a healthy woman of childbearing age. It is not going to change. Men are always going to be this way and if people do not like it – blame God, evolution, biology. Women are of course somewhat visual but nowhere near the level of men. Women seek the alpha male that can protect her and her children and the looks of that strong male are not as important as his ability to protect. Of course we have evolved emotionally and a man or woman can love and be attracted to all different kinds – however that strong biological make up will never go away.

    • However predictable this antiquated argument is…. it’s still hi-larious. Oh yeah, and, um… wrong. LOLOLOL.

  4. Very typical of community college vice university debate. Call the other’s arguement silly, stupid, sexist, etc. rather than discuss. Of course human nature has evolved beyond the instinctual nature of our long past anscestors and we can be attracted to all different types. For example, I am attracted to skinney, pale, goth like women who may not exude the “healthy” female our past homosapas would have wanted to breed with. However, I believe that biological instinct still strongly exists within us. Whether you like it or not, there is an objective standard of beauty that still exists that fits the standard of the “healthy” female. Look at magazine covers, page 6 girls, playboy, porn, etc. They play to mens’ desires and are based on demographic likes. What sells to men is what they are attracted to – younger women, firm breasts, hips, healthy, childbearing age, etc. The biological instinct that led to breeding healthy offspring still resides in our present and evolved primate stage.

    • You just proved my point; you are “attracted to skinny, pale, goth-like women who may not exude the ‘healthy’ female our post homosapas [sic] would have wanted to breed with.” You’re not the only one. And what about all those gay men? There are so many deviations from the “men-are-created-to-visually-assess-women-for-breeding-and-that-is-why-they-are-more-sexually-visual” theory that it’s almost completely useless to discuss it. I could discuss at length why we know the world is not flat, but I’d really rather not…. but here I am doing essentially that. Since my only wish is to satisfy your expectations, here is a more lengthy reply.

You are correct: there *is* the little matter of the “standard of beauty.” These “standards,” however, differ based on what culture you were raised in, what area of the globe you live in, what your personal preferences are based on biological predisposition, life experience and millions of other factors. The “standard of beauty” is something we’ve made up. It’s something *every* region of the world makes up. It has and will always change according to time, location and cultural influence.

*Now* can I call the argument silly, stupid and sexist? Because I wouldn’t want you to think I was a “typical” or “community college” kind of person.

  5. excellent rebuttal. isn’t that more fun? also, i completely retract my silly statement about community colleges. that was stupid. i see from above that u r skipping this semester. i don’t know the reason of course but don’t let school slip away. if you have time read ‘the dark side of man’ and ‘demonic males’ they may change your mind on this just a bit.

    • Thank you very much for your comments and participation. Everyone has a different perspective and it’s fascinating to explore just how many there are! Thanks for the advice about school… I’ll keep that in mind. 🙂
